The following are the Ground Rules for:
All Miller Softball Fields
Dead ball, if ball goes through opening of dugout (the open space between the back-stop and the dugout) or under the back stop.
On the first and third base sides extend the fence out straight out with an imaginary line. Any overthrows past this imaginary fence line or over the actual fence, a dead ball is called and the base runners and the batter runner are awarded 2 bases from the point of release from an infielder on the first play of the ball. If the overthrow is from the outfield, the base award of 2 bases from the point of release and the last bag touched by the base runners and the batter runner.
From the end of the dugout out fence an imaginary line is drawn at a 90* angle (a right angle). This right angle now defines the dead ball area behind the dugout fence and the live ball area beyond the dugout area which would be adjacent to the right and left field foul lines. This is done so that a defensive ball player can catch a ball in the live ball area. The defensive ball player cannot catch the ball behind the dugout in the dead ball area.
Once the catch is made an out is declared a legal catch. The defensive ball player cannot throw the ball over the dead ball area. If this occurs, a dead ball is called and all runners, including the batter runner are awarded one (1) base from the last base touched.
The above defines how the ground rules will be posted on this website. The ASA rule books that you were given at the meetings define the awarding of bases on overthrows into dead ball territory as well as players running into dead ball territory with the ball. It is up to each manager to understand these rules. If you have any questions please direct them to the umpire(s) doing your game(s).
The umpires will discuss these ground rules with each team manager prior to the start of any games. Your job as the manager is to understand the rules and advise your teammates about the ground rules. If in doubt, ask questions of the umpire(s) at the ground rule meeting prior to the start of a game.
